The project will plant 500,000 trees to protect and conserve Bunyala Forest in Western Kenya that has high insect diversity, numerous birds and butterfly species, and the watershed of several rivers. As we protect and conserve the forest, we shall provide education to the community to take care of the unique biodiversity and water resources.
Challenge
Deforestation and pressure on the forest land from the neighboring communities resulted in the clearing of the natural vegetation on large parts of the forest and the replanting of exotic commercial trees. A section of the forest land is degraded and does not have any trees as well as river catchments are unprotected from human activities.

ACDT plans to plant 500,000 trees in the forest to restore and conserve Bunyala Forest for the benefit of its unique biodiversity and water resources, raise awareness among the local communities that neighbor the forest on the importance of protection, and protect water catchments from human activities. We shall fence the section that has been planted with trees.
Long-term impact
The project will restore Bunyala Forest as a sustainable home for primates, including monkeys, butterflies, moths, bees, and dragonflies, a home for various bird species, including Hornbill, an important watershed, as well as a rich zone for tourism activities, including forest walks, primate and bird watching. We shall have a conserved environment with fewer climatic disasters.
